For this project I worked with a partner. We worked together to write a story that is in Spanish about our cats. We generated a story that would be interesting to young children. Our class wrote these children's books to share with rural communities in Nicaragua. In Nicaragua many of the children there don't have access to books. So our class decided to write books and raise money to send them these books.
We wrote these books through story jumper. And the program that we are using for this project is: Seeds of Learning. Each book costed $15, so we took it upon ourselves to go fundraiser. And in the end was able to give a big variety of books the the children over in Nicaragua.
Dia De Los Muertos:
Dia de los Muertos is the day of the dead. It is held on November 2nd and it is a celebration of those in your family who have passed away. At this time they all set up alters to commemorate their loved ones. They bake goods like dead bread. And gather objects from the person. Then they go down to the grave yard where their loved ones are buried. They then party all night, because they believe that their loved ones come back and dance with them. It was at the beginning celebrated during summer and lasted for a whole month, but was then moved to November because they wanted more people to by into the celebration. Also November is near the time of Toto Santos which is a Catholic holiday, so the Catholics would join in on the celebration. They use to celebrate in Mexico, but now they celebrate in Guatemala, Brazil, Spain, and Mexican american communities in the United States. I chose to celebrate John Denver because it was to hard for me to do a family member. In a way though John Denver is part of the Colorado family because he grew up in Colorado. I have always looked up to him because I grew up listening to his music. It was very fun to learn about things I didn't know about him. For an example I didn't know that John Denver had a daughter and son as well as married two wives by the end of his life. The sad part about learning about John Denver was finding out his death. I didn't know that he died during a plane crash, that was very sad news to hear. Making the Alter for John Denver was hard because I decided to do an art piece and getting the look of what he looked like was hard to master with paint. Though it was fun to bring in a creative piece into the exhibition. I enjoyed crafting the papel picado because it was a fun challenge and a beautiful turn out of my work. On my over all project I feel really good because of all my effort in everything. I feel like I better understand Dia de los Muertos because of putting on our very own celebration. It was also my very first exhibition at Animas High School and it was fun to see how Animas does their projects. This was such a fun exhibition and I can't wait to enjoy more.
